Common Issues with Furnaces or Air Conditioners
If your furnace or AC unit is not working, there are several things you can do to diagnose the problem before calling for repair service:
If you've tried all these things and still can't get your furnace or air conditioner to start, feel free to give our office a call at (719) 548-8880 and we will send a service technician to diagnose your system.
- Check your thermostat. Is your thermostat working? Occasionally, thermostats can malfunction, which causes issues with your furnace or air conditioner.
- Check the power to your furnace. Is the power on? Though this may seem obvious, oftentimes a furnace that won't "kick on" is disconnected or not powered somehow.
- Check the power switch. Is the switch next to your furnace turned on or off? If you look in your furnace room, you will usually find a switch, which looks like a light switch, immediately next to the furnace. If this switch does not control the light, it may be the shut off switch for the furnace itself. Sometimes children or even adults can accidentally turn off the switch, not realizing it until the furnace fails to start.
- Check the doors to your furnace. Occasionally, a homeowner may forget to put the door back on the front of the furnace after replacing filters or performing other maintenance. This is an important step, because the door also has a safety switch that turns off the furnace when the door is open.
- Check the filter. Have you replaced the filter recently? Furnaces and air conditioners have filters that need to be replaced often (30 --- 90 days) and if these filters become clogged, most systems will shut off.
