KEY TAKEAWAYS:

PictureWhen Should a Furnace Be Replaced? - HVAC Solutions
  • When should a furnace be replaced? On average, most furnaces only need to be replaced once every 20 to 30 years. If you’ve been keeping up with your HVAC maintenance and your furnace is in working condition, then you won’t have to worry about replacing your furnace for at least a few decades!
  • If your furnace has been damaged, however, then you may need to replace it sooner.
  • Some of the most obvious signs of furnace damage include rising energy bills, strange rattling sounds coming from your furnace, abnormal furnace smells, poor air quality, and inadequate heat throughout your home or office.
  • If you notice any of these signs, then your furnace could be damaged beyond repair, and it may be time to get it replaced!
  • If you’re not sure if your furnace needs to be replaced, then it’s best to get it inspected by an HVAC professional.

If your furnace hasn’t been acting right, then it’s only natural to have questions. You’re probably worried that your furnace is damaged, and you may even be wondering, does it need to be replaced? So, when should a furnace be replaced? How do you know when it’s time to get a new heating unit and ditch your old one? Let’s break it down.

In case you’re new to this blog, we’re a team of certified HVAC professionals based in Colorado Springs. We’re making HVAC education a lot simpler. So, let’s solve the mystery: when should a furnace be replaced? Then, we’ll tell you how you can get your furnace inspected and diagnosed by an HVAC professional for free!

When should a furnace be replaced, and when should it just be repaired?

If you’ve been Googling, when should a furnace be replaced, then chances are, your furnace just hasn’t been acting right lately. Now, you’re wondering if it can be repaired or if it will need to be completely replaced. All of these are valid concerns, and we’re here to help you get to the bottom of your furnace problems.

On average, most furnaces have a lifespan of a few decades. Because of this, it’s recommended that you get your unit replaced once every 20 to 30 years. The only exception to this rule is if your furnace is severely damaged or dying out.

How do I know if my furnace is damaged or dying?

When your furnace is damaged beyond repair, there are a few obvious signs that you may notice. If you notice any of the signs below, then your furnace is probably on its last legs and you will need to have it replaced soon:

  • Rising energy bills. Have you noticed your energy bills slowly increasing? The culprit is probably your heater. Damaged heaters demand more energy to run. If these damages aren’t treated quickly, then your heater could break down completely.
  • Poor air quality. Have you been noticing more dust than usual? Your heater could be having a hard time circulating air properly, and it could be severely clogged. This could lead to irreparable damages if the problem isn’t treated quickly.
  • Strange smells. If you’ve been noticing strange furnace smells, then this is a sign that your unit is quite literally burning out.
  • Strange sounds. Have you been noticing a strange rattling or clanking sound coming from your furnace? Then you’ll need to get your heater inspected immediately, as this is a sign of serious damages.
  • Inadequate heat. Noticing cold spots in your home or office? Then your heater is struggling to circulate warm air properly! Your unit could be clogged or seriously damaged.
